The Central government has officially lifted the ban on government employees participating in activities related to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a restriction that had been in place since November 1966 during the tenure of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. This change was implemented by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions.
BJP IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya announced the decision in a post on X, highlighting that the Modi government has withdrawn what he described as an unconstitutional order issued 58 years ago.
Several state governments, including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, had already removed restrictions on government employees’ involvement with the RSS prior to this central government decision. This policy shift now extends the allowance nationwide, enabling all government employees to engage in RSS activities without fear of disciplinary action.
This decision reflects the ongoing integration and normalization of the RSS within public and political spheres in India, aligning with broader trends under the current administration. It is expected to generate varied reactions, with proponents seeing it as a correction of past injustices and critics potentially raising concerns about the implications for the neutrality and impartiality of the civil service.
