New Delhi, July 18 2024 : The Supreme Court of India officially welcomed two new judges, Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh and Justice R. Mahadevan, in a swearing-in ceremony held this morning at 10:30 AM. With this appointment, the Supreme Court is now back to its full strength of 34 judges.
Justice Kotiswar Singh, formerly the Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Courts, makes history as the first judge from Manipur to join the Supreme Court. His appointment is seen as a notable step toward greater regional representation, particularly for the North-East region. The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, highlighted Justice Singh’s exceptional judicial performance, administrative acumen, and integrity in their recommendation.
Justice R. Mahadevan, who has been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, was also sworn in today. His appointment is significant for its emphasis on enhancing diversity within the Supreme Court. Justice Mahadevan, who comes from a backward community in Tamil Nadu, is expected to contribute valuable experience and represent diverse backgrounds on the bench. Despite being third in seniority among Madras High Court judges, his selection underscores the Collegium’s commitment to diverse representation.
The appointments follow a resolution passed by the Supreme Court Collegium on July 11, with the Union Government officially notifying the appointments on July 16. The new judges’ addition marks an important moment in the Court’s ongoing efforts to reflect a broader spectrum of Indian society.
