Mamata Banerjee Targets AIMIM, ISF Over Malda Incident; Alleges Political Provocation by BJP, Congress

West Bengal CM raises concerns over law and order, questions electoral process consistency

April 3, 2026:  West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has held AIMIM and ISF responsible for the recent incident involving the alleged gherao of judicial officials in Malda district. She also claimed that the situation was fueled by indirect support and provocation from rival political parties, including the BJP and the Congress.

Addressing a public gathering on Friday, Banerjee criticized the role of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and the Indian Secular Front (ISF), accusing them of contributing to unrest in the region. According to her, such incidents threaten the stability of governance and the integrity of institutions.

The Chief Minister further alleged that both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress were indirectly encouraging tensions on the ground for political gain. She suggested that these parties were attempting to destabilize the state administration ahead of upcoming elections.

Banerjee also raised a question regarding the electoral process, asking why the same voter lists used during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections cannot be adopted for the upcoming state Assembly polls. She indicated that maintaining consistency in electoral rolls would enhance transparency and reduce unnecessary disputes.

The incident in Malda has sparked political debate across the state, with different parties trading allegations over responsibility and intent. Meanwhile, concerns over law and order and the functioning of democratic institutions continue to remain in focus.
