New Delhi: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has asserted that digital platforms must shoulder greater responsibility for the content they host, particularly when it comes to safeguarding children from harmful material online.
Emphasising the rapid expansion of the digital ecosystem in India, the minister said that while technology has opened new avenues for innovation and communication, it also brings significant risks if left unchecked. He underlined that online intermediaries cannot distance themselves from the consequences of content circulating on their platforms.
Vaishnaw stressed the importance of building robust mechanisms to prevent the spread of inappropriate and unsafe material targeting minors. He noted that child safety in the digital space should be treated as a non-negotiable priority, requiring coordinated efforts from technology companies, regulators, parents, and educators.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to creating a secure digital environment, he pointed to ongoing policy measures designed to enhance transparency and accountability in the tech sector. He said that innovation must go hand in hand with responsibility, especially in a country with one of the world’s largest internet user bases.
The minister also called for stronger age-verification systems, improved grievance redressal frameworks, and proactive monitoring tools to detect and remove harmful content swiftly. He reiterated that digital growth should not come at the cost of children’s safety or societal well-being.
