New Delhi, March 23, 2026: The Budget Session of the Delhi Legislative Assembly commenced on Monday amid escalating tensions between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Opposition Aam Aadmi Party, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta set to unveil a ‘green budget’ framework alongside a potentially record-breaking financial outlay.
The three-day session, running from March 23 to March 25, opened with the presentation of the Economic Survey, while the full Budget is scheduled to be tabled on March 24.
Officials indicated that the total expenditure could exceed ₹1 lakh crore, signalling a significant rise in government spending compared to the previous fiscal year.
A key highlight of this year’s Budget is expected to be the introduction of a green budgeting model, aimed at aligning economic development with environmental sustainability.
Under this approach, departments may be required to earmark funds for sectors such as pollution control, renewable energy, water conservation, and biodiversity protection, ensuring measurable environmental outcomes.
The government is also likely to prioritise investments in areas including electric mobility, solar infrastructure, waste management, and sustainable urban planning.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has hinted at targeted schemes for women and girls, with a broader emphasis on inclusive growth and effective policy implementation.
Ahead of the session, the government conducted consultations with various stakeholders, including students, industry representatives, gig workers, and community groups, to shape budget priorities.
Meanwhile, the Assembly is set to introduce technological upgrades, including ‘Vidhan Sathi’, an AI-powered assistant designed to support legislators with research and policy insights, along with digital devices for real-time access to proceedings.
Despite the policy focus, the session is likely to witness sharp political exchanges, as Leader of Opposition Atishi has raised concerns over the suspension of four party MLAs and warned of a possible boycott if the issue remains unresolved.
The ruling party is also expected to move a censure motion in response to recent parliamentary developments, adding to the charged atmosphere inside the House.
Even as political differences persist, the Budget presentation remains the central agenda, with the Economic Survey expected to provide a detailed overview of Delhi’s economic performance and set the tone for upcoming fiscal decisions.
