A tense situation unfolded in Kerala’s Malappuram district when the convoy of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor was obstructed during an election campaign visit on Friday. The incident occurred as the MP was travelling to Wandoor to support United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate A P Anilkumar.
According to individuals accompanying Tharoor, a group of men intercepted the vehicles and blocked their movement. When a member of the security team stepped out to address the situation, he was reportedly attacked by the group.
Local police quickly intervened, registering a case and taking two individuals into custody in connection with the incident. Officials stated that, at this stage, there is no evidence to suggest a political conspiracy behind the altercation.
Later, Tharoor reassured supporters through social media, confirming that he was unharmed and that his team proceeded with the scheduled campaign events despite the disruption.
During his visit, the Thiruvananthapuram MP expressed optimism about the prospects of the United Democratic Front in the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. He highlighted the alliance’s focus on development and job creation, stressing the need to generate opportunities within the state to prevent migration of youth.
Tharoor also reiterated his criticism of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Bill 2026, arguing that it could adversely impact institutions run by community organisations. He called for a detailed review of the proposed legislation.
With polling scheduled later this month, political activity in Kerala continues to intensify amid heightened campaigning and public engagement.
