Bihar , November 7, 2025 — In a sharp political jab during his Bihar election rally on Friday, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi questioned Jay Shah’s credentials to lead the BCCI and ICC, claiming his rise was due to political lineage rather than cricketing merit.
Jay Shah, the son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has held key administrative positions in Indian cricket, driving several transformative initiatives — including equal pay for male and female cricketers and the launch of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). His tenure has also coincided with notable milestones, such as the Indian women’s team clinching the 2024 Asia Cup.
Responding to Gandhi’s remarks, BJP supporters defended Shah’s leadership by pointing out that several Congress figures, including Sharad Pawar and Rajiv Shukla, had also headed cricket bodies despite lacking professional playing experience. They argued that cricket administration in India has long included individuals from political backgrounds, making Gandhi’s criticism politically motivated.
The exchange has sparked another round of debate over the intersection of politics and sports governance in India, especially as election campaigns intensify across Bihar.
