Indore (Madhya Pradesh), January 17: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Saturday visited patients and families affected by the recent water contamination outbreak in Bhagirathpura, Indore. The outbreak, which caused vomiting and diarrhoea, has been linked to contaminated water in the area.
Gandhi visited four patients undergoing treatment at Bombay Hospital, a private facility, enquiring about their health and meeting their family members. He was accompanied by Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari and party leader Umang Singhar.
He also visited the Bhagirathpura locality, where he interacted with the families of deceased persons, offering condolences and support. Residents have claimed that 24 people have died in the outbreak, while the State Government, in a report submitted to the Madhya Pradesh High Court, has confirmed seven deaths, including a five-month-old infant.
A government-constituted committee from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College indicated that 15 deaths in the area could be linked to the outbreak in some way. The administration has provided ₹2 lakh compensation each to 21 families of deceased persons, acknowledging that while some deaths were due to other causes, financial aid was extended on humanitarian grounds.
Police had made extensive security arrangements in Bhagirathpura ahead of Gandhi’s visit, including barricades at several locations.
