In a major effort to expand maternal welfare benefits across the country, the Ministry of Women and Child Development has extended the special registration drive for the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) till August 15, 2025. The drive is being held as part of the government’s broader public engagement efforts under the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.

The nationwide campaign, being implemented at the grassroots level, is led by Anganwadi and ASHA workers who are visiting homes to raise awareness and ensure enrollment of all eligible pregnant and lactating women under the scheme. The focus is not only on expanding registration but also on promoting the importance of maternal nutrition and positive health-seeking practices during and after pregnancy.

The PMMVY offers financial assistance to women as part of a broader effort to reduce maternal and infant mortality. The scheme provides ₹5,000 in two installments for the birth of the first child and ₹6,000 in a single installment for the second girl child. These benefits act as partial compensation for wage loss, enabling women to take proper rest before and after childbirth while supporting better health outcomes for both mother and child.

Since its inception, the scheme has seen a massive impact, with over 4.05 crore women having received maternity benefits as of July 31, 2025. The total financial aid disbursed under the scheme has reached an impressive ₹19,028 crore, directly transferred to the beneficiaries’ bank or post office accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode.

The scheme is being implemented through a robust digital platform, PMMVYSoft, launched in March 2023. The software enables real-time Aadhaar authentication through UIDAI and ensures verified payments via the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This digital backbone has made it easier for authorities to track, validate, and disburse funds efficiently.

In addition, several new features have been integrated into the PMMVY system to improve coverage and user experience. These include a Facial Recognition System (FRS) for biometric verification, a multilingual helpline (14408), an Integrated Grievance Module, and a due-list tracker for identifying women likely to be eligible but not yet enrolled.

PMMVY is a centrally sponsored scheme under the ‘Samarthya’ sub-scheme of Mission Shakti, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to improving maternal and child health across India. The recent extension of the registration drive provides another opportunity to bring more women under the scheme’s umbrella, especially those in remote or underserved regions.

As India marches towards inclusive and sustainable development, ensuring the health and well-being of mothers remains at the heart of national policy—and PMMVY continues to play a critical role in that mission.
