New Delhi – Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Leaders’ Summit in Tianjin on Sunday.
The two leaders reviewed progress in bilateral ties since their last interaction in Kazan in October 2024. Both stressed that India and China should work as development partners, not rivals, and underlined the importance of a relationship rooted in mutual respect, sensitivity, and shared interests.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted that peace along the border remains essential for the growth of bilateral relations. The leaders welcomed the disengagement measures implemented last year and noted that calm has been maintained in frontier regions. They also expressed commitment to advancing a fair and mutually acceptable boundary resolution, based on political will and long-term interests.
Both sides recognized their economies’ role in stabilizing global trade and emphasized the need to deepen trade and investment ties while addressing the trade imbalance. The leaders also called for greater people-to-people exchanges, including direct flights, visa facilitation, and the revival of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.
Prime Minister Modi underlined that India and China both pursue strategic autonomy and their relations should not be viewed through the lens of any third country. They agreed on the importance of cooperation on regional and global issues such as counter-terrorism and fair trade at multilateral platforms.
Prime Minister Modi expressed support for China’s current SCO Presidency and extended an invitation to President Xi to attend the BRICS Summit India will host in 2026. President Xi welcomed the invitation and assured China’s support for India’s BRICS Presidency.
On the sidelines, Prime Minister Modi also met Mr. Cai Qi, member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China. The two exchanged views on strengthening bilateral relations in line with the vision set by the top leadership.
