Prime Minister Narendra Modi today leaves for a visit to Puglia, Italy, to attend the G7 summit tomorrow. At a press conference in New Delhi, External Affairs Minister Vinay Kwatra said India has been invited as a partner country. This will be the Prime Minister’s first overseas trip after three consecutive terms in office. He said the visit will also be an opportunity to engage with other leaders attending the G7 summit on issues of importance to India and the Global South. The G7 group was established in response to the 1973 energy crisis as a platform for economic and financial cooperation. It comprises of the US, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and the UK. This will be India’s 11th participation in the G7 summit and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s fifth consecutive participation in the summit. The three-day G7 summit begins today (June 13, 2024).
The Prime Minister will attend an outreach session tomorrow (June 14 and 24). The session will focus on artificial intelligence, energy, Africa and the Mediterranean. On the sidelines of the summit, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral meetings with leaders of G7 countries. Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni. The two Prime Ministers last met at the COP28 summit in Abu Dhabi last year.
