High-Level Meeting Held to Make Delhi Legislative Assembly Solar-Powered, Drone Survey Conducted of Assembly Rooftops

New Delhi, April 9, 2025: The Delhi Legislative Assembly is set to become India’s first assembly to operate entirely on solar energy. In a significant step towards sustainability, Delhi Assembly Speaker Shri Vijender Gupta convened a high-level meeting today at his office to finalize the plan. Officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Assembly participated in the discussion. A drone survey of the Assembly rooftops was also conducted to identify optimal locations for solar panel installation.

Under this project, a 500-kilowatt solar power system will be installed, which is expected to be completed within the next 60 days. The system will not only meet the Assembly’s energy needs but also generate 10% surplus electricity. This initiative is projected to save approximately ₹15 lakh per month in electricity costs and significantly reduce government expenditure on power.

Project Objective
* Dismantling the old 200 KW solar rooftop system
* Install a 500 kW rooftop solar system in 60 Days from the Date of LOA
* Saving on the Monthly Electricity Bill of 15 Lakh
* Spread Awareness In People related to Green Energy Goals and Zero Electricity Bill
* Promote clean energy usage in governance
* Reduce carbon footprint and public energy costs

Speaking about the initiative, Speaker Shri Gupta said, “Through solar power, we are moving toward a self-reliant Assembly. This project will give Delhi Assembly a distinct identity across the nation. By embracing clean and green energy, we aim to set a precedent for other legislative bodies in the country.”

He further added, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the nation is progressing towards an Atmanirbhar Bharat. The Delhi Assembly is fully committed to energy conservation and environmental protection through the use of solar energy.”

Speaker Gupta directed the concerned officials to commence work on the project immediately and issue the tender by next week.

The upcoming monsoon session will be fully powered by solar energy, promoting energy conservation and clean energy across the nation. This initiative is also expected to encourage the public to adopt green energy practices.
