New Delhi : External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has stated that India and China are actively working to rebuild their bilateral ties, which were significantly strained following the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes. He emphasized that a prolonged tense relationship would not serve the interests of either nation. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, hosted by the Asia Society, Jaishankar underscored the importance of ensuring that differences between the two nations do not escalate into disputes and that competition does not turn into conflict.
During his conversation with Dr. Kyung-wha Kang, President and CEO of the Asia Society, Jaishankar highlighted that while India and China are competitors in multiple spheres, it is crucial to manage their differences through diplomacy and dialogue. He noted that there has been some improvement in bilateral relations since October 2023, as both sides have engaged in diplomatic discussions to ease tensions.
The minister acknowledged that China’s rise as a global power and shifting geopolitical dynamics, including changes in the United States’ strategic approach, have contributed to a fundamental transformation in international relations. He emphasized that India remains committed to maintaining stable relations with its neighbors while safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Jaishankar reiterated that India has consistently advocated for peaceful dialogue and diplomatic negotiations to resolve outstanding issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). He also pointed out that both countries must continue engagement at the military and diplomatic levels to prevent further escalations.
The Galwan Valley clashes in June 2020 marked a significant downturn in India-China relations, leading to heightened military tensions along the LAC. Since then, multiple rounds of talks have been held between military commanders and diplomats from both sides to ease the situation. However, a complete resolution remains elusive.
Jaishankar’s remarks come at a time when India and China are exploring ways to resume broader economic and trade cooperation while addressing security concerns. He stressed that ensuring stability between the two Asian giants is essential for regional and global peace.
