New Delhi, Mar 26 ,2025 : India on Wednesday strongly criticized the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) for its “prejudiced and politically motivated” annual report, asserting that attempts to tarnish India’s reputation as a symbol of democracy and inclusivity will fail.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in a statement, emphasized that it is, in fact, the USCIRF that deserves to be classified as an “entity of concern.”
In its latest report, the USCIRF recommended that India, along with Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Vietnam, be listed under “additional Countries of Particular Concern.”
Responding to this, the MEA spokesperson stated that the USCIRF has once again demonstrated a pattern of issuing “biased and politically charged assessments.”
“The USCIRF’s continuous misrepresentation of isolated incidents and its attempt to question India’s vibrant multicultural society indicate a deliberate agenda rather than a genuine concern for religious freedom,” the statement added.
India, home to 1.4 billion people practicing diverse religions, upholds its commitment to pluralism. The MEA pointed out that the USCIRF refuses to recognize India’s diverse and harmonious social fabric.
“Efforts to weaken India’s image as a stronghold of democracy and tolerance will not succeed. In reality, the USCIRF itself should be designated as an entity of concern,” the statement concluded.
