During the meeting, CM Sukhu apprised the Home Minister of the extensive damage caused by the heavy rains in 2023, which severely impacted drinking water supplies, irrigation schemes, roads, bridges, and critical infrastructure across Himachal Pradesh. He highlighted the massive financial burden borne by the state in carrying out relief, rehabilitation, and restoration efforts, despite the absence of Central assistance.
“The state government has been managing the post-disaster situation with its own resources, but the financial strain is immense. We are hopeful that the Centre will expedite the release of pending relief funds to help us rebuild and recover from the devastation,” said Chief Minister Sukhu.
In addition to the monsoon relief compensation, CM Sukhu also discussed various other state-related issues with the Home Minister. While specific details of these discussions were not disclosed, it is believed that topics related to infrastructure development, disaster preparedness, and federal support for ongoing state projects were on the agenda.
Responding to the Chief Minister’s appeal, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured all possible assistance from the Central Government. He acknowledged the gravity of the situation and assured that the matter of financial aid for Himachal Pradesh would be reviewed at the earliest.
The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary and Secretary Revenue Onkar Chand Sharma, who provided further insights into the financial requirements and the challenges faced by the state in disaster recovery efforts.
Himachal Pradesh faced one of its worst monsoon seasons in 2023, with incessant rains triggering landslides, floods, and infrastructure damage across the state. The destruction led to widespread disruption of essential services, including transportation, power supply, and water distribution. The state had sought financial aid under PDNA, but the awaited compensation has yet to be disbursed.
CM Sukhu’s meeting with Amit Shah underscores the pressing financial needs of Himachal Pradesh and the importance of Centre-State cooperation in disaster management. The outcome of this discussion will be crucial in determining the financial relief the state receives and its future disaster preparedness strategies.
As Himachal Pradesh continues its recovery efforts, the focus remains on securing timely financial support to rebuild infrastructure and restore normalcy for its citizens. The assurance from the Union Home Minister has sparked optimism, but the state awaits concrete action from the Centre in the coming weeks.
