Telangana Chief Minister announces Welfare measures for Gig Workers

Hyderabad, December 24, 2023– In a significant move aimed at addressing the concerns of gig workers, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has committed to introducing a Rs five lakh accidental insurance policy for cab drivers, food delivery personnel, and auto drivers. The announcement was made during a meeting at Nampally Exhibition Grounds on Saturday evening.

During the gathering, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy empathized with the challenges faced by cab drivers, food delivery personnel, and auto drivers. He directed officials to extend financial assistance of Rs two lakh to the family of a Swiggy delivery person who tragically lost his life in an unfortunate incident involving a dog chase and a subsequent fall from a building.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister assured comprehensive medical care coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh under the Rajiv Arogyasri scheme for the aforementioned gig workers. In addition to the insurance policies, he pledged the creation of a dedicated app, developed by T-Hub and modeled after Ola, to streamline operations for these workers.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to the welfare of gig workers, Chief Minister Reddy emphasized the need for organizations to prioritize the well-being of their workforce alongside profit considerations. He drew inspiration from effective policies implemented in Rajasthan and warned of stringent action against those failing to adhere to fair employment practices.

Expressing disappointment in the lack of assistance from the previous government to the family of the deceased Swiggy delivery person, Chief Minister Reddy instructed officials to collect family details and provide Rs 2 lakh assistance from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).

Cab drivers, food delivery personnel, and auto drivers were advised by the Chief Minister to submit their applications digitally or manually during Grama Sabhas organized from December 28 to January 6, 2024. Revanth Reddy assured prompt addressing of all applications received through Prajavani.

The meeting witnessed the presence of IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu and AICC Secretaries.
