Dehradun, December 25 – A special event was held in Dehradun to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday. The programme saw the presence of prominent personalities including Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, India TV Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Rajat Sharma, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’. A statue of Atal Bihari Vajpayee was unveiled during the event as a tribute to the leader.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee: A Legacy of Leadership and Service
Atal Bihari Vajpayee, born in 1924, was a founding member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and served as India’s Prime Minister three times. His first term in 1996 lasted just 13 days, followed by a 13-month tenure starting in 1998. His third term began in 1999, during which he became the first non-Congress leader to complete a full term as Prime Minister. Vajpayee also served as India’s External Affairs Minister from 1977 to 1979 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Moraji Desai.
Vajpayee passed away on August 16, 2018, at AIIMS Hospital in Delhi. To honor his legacy, a prayer meeting was held at his memorial, which was attended by President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Ministers, including Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister JP Nadda.
Leaders from Various Sectors Pay Tribute
The tribute meeting was also attended by BJP’s allied party leaders, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Janata Dal (United) leader Lalan Singh, and Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) leader Jitan Ram Manjhi. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and members of Vajpayee’s adopted daughter’s family were present at the gathering as well.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his thoughts on social media, stating, “Respected Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji gave the country a new direction and momentum while preserving constitutional values, and his impact will always remain eternal. It has been my privilege to receive his full companionship and blessings.”
