New Delhi, July 15 2024 : Shri Upendra Chandra Joshi, an officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service, has assumed the charge of General Manager of North Central Railway. Prior to this, he served as the Principal Chief Operations Manager of Northern Railway.
Shri Joshi, a 1988 batch officer, has extensive experience in both traffic-related issues and general administration. He began his railway career as an Assistant Operations Manager in Samastipur and held various positions including Divisional Operations Manager and Divisional Commercial Manager in Lucknow, Senior Divisional Operations Manager in Varanasi and Izzatnagar Divisions, Deputy Chief Operations Manager and Deputy Chief Commercial Manager at Northeast Frontier Railway, and Senior Divisional Commercial Manager in Jodhpur.
He also served as Chief Commercial Manager (IT) in Northern Railway and contributed significantly to the implementation and integration of the Control Office Application (COA) during his tenure at the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS). This application forms the basis of the National Train Enquiry System, providing real-time train running information to passengers.
Shri Joshi held other notable positions including Executive Director (Planning and Management) in the Railway Board, Divisional Railway Manager in Kota, and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Mines.
Originally from Almora, Uttarakhand, Shri Joshi received his early education in Ranikhet and Almora. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur.
After formally taking charge, Shri Joshi held a meeting with all Principal Heads of Departments, with Divisional Railway Managers joining via video conferencing. He outlined his priorities, emphasizing safety, punctuality, and customer satisfaction. He highlighted the significant improvements in infrastructure and passenger amenities over the last decade and stressed the importance of providing real-time responses to customer queries and grievances.
Shri Joshi also focused on ensuring safe operations and instilling public confidence. He underscored the importance of punctuality, infrastructure development, and meeting the needs of freight customers. Addressing the upcoming Kumbh Mela, he emphasized coordinated efforts with state, civil, and mela authorities to complete related infrastructure works on time and run adequate special trains to accommodate pilgrims traveling to Prayagraj.
Shri Joshi’s dedication to enhancing railway services and his commitment to public-oriented improvements reflect his vision for the North Central Railway.
