Astana ; 2nd July2024
The 24th Meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State (SCO Summit) is scheduled to be held on July 4 in Astana, Kazakhstan, under Kazakhstan’s presidency. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will lead the Indian delegation at the summit.
The summit will involve a review of the organization’s activities over the past two decades, and discussions on the state and prospects of multilateral cooperation. Leaders will also address regional and international issues of importance.
India’s participation in the SCO is guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘SECURE’ SCO, which emphasizes Security, Economic cooperation, Connectivity, Unity, Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and Environmental protection.
India, during its first-ever presidency of the SCO, hosted the 23rd Meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State in a virtual format on July 4, 2023. The SCO member states collectively represent half of the world’s population and nearly a third of the global GDP. The 2024 summit is anticipated to see the inclusion of Belarus as the tenth member, following Iran’s admission last year.
