Jaipur, March 10, 2026: A major crackdown by Rajasthan’s Food Safety Department has uncovered a disturbing case of expired food being sold to unsuspecting consumers. Authorities destroyed around 1.5 lakh kilograms of Amul-branded products after discovering that a Jaipur-based distributor had been buying items near their expiry dates and tampering with packaging to resell them.
Officials launched the operation after receiving a tip through the state government’s 181 helpline, which reported suspicious activity at Athlete Distributor in the Kho Nagorian area. A raid led by the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO), Jaipur-II, uncovered nearly 12,000 cartons of expired products, including noodles, ketchup, mayonnaise, and energy drinks.
“The warehouse was highly secretive. Neighbours reported that when 10-12 workers entered, the main gate would remain closed all day,” said Food Safety Commissioner T Shubhmangala, highlighting the unusual operational practices.
Investigators found that approximately 3,000 cartons had their printed expiry dates removed using chemicals like thinner and acetone. Another 4,500 cartons of Amul products were prepared for repackaging with altered dates. Additional Commissioner Bhagwat Singh revealed that the distributor, Gagan Ahuja, admitted learning the method of tampering with expiry dates from YouTube videos.
The destroyed products were removed over a four-day operation, requiring 27 trucks to transport the expired stock to a designated dumping site—all at the distributor’s expense. The investigation is ongoing to determine whether any of these items had already reached consumers.
The expired products were originally manufactured by the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union in Gujarat and supplied via Advansis India Private Limited. Company representatives confirmed that expiry dates had been tampered with and noted that the distributor routinely bought near-expiry goods at discounted prices.
The warehouse has now been sealed, the distributor barred from food-related business, and the firm’s food license was found expired, rendering its operations illegal. Amul has yet to respond publicly to the reports.
