Kolkata: A political storm has erupted in West Bengal after a purported sting video released by the Trinamool Congress triggered serious allegations against former party leader Humayun Kabir, leading to a swift fallout with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen.
The video, circulated by the ruling party, allegedly shows Kabir claiming connections with leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party and outlining a strategy to influence minority voting patterns in the state. It also purportedly references a large financial arrangement, including claims of a ₹1,000 crore plan with an advance payment of ₹200 crore.
The Trinamool Congress further alleged that the plan was aimed at weakening Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Denying all claims, Humayun Kabir dismissed the video as “AI-generated” and accused the ruling party of orchestrating a smear campaign. He insisted he has had no contact with BJP leaders for years and challenged his opponents to present concrete evidence.
In a significant political development, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, announced it was ending its alliance with Kabir’s Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP).
The party stated it could not be associated with remarks that question the integrity of Muslims and declared it would contest the West Bengal elections independently.
The Trinamool Congress has demanded a probe by the Enforcement Directorate into the claims made in the video. Meanwhile, the controversy continues to intensify as political parties trade accusations ahead of the crucial polls.
