Bollywood Veteran Govardhan Asrani Passes Away at 84

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, actors Akshay Kumar, and Anupam Kher were among those who remembered Asrani’s contribution to Indian cinema and his indelible presence on screen.

Mumbai, October 20, 2025: Renowned Bollywood actor Govardhan Asrani, celebrated for his impeccable comic timing in over 350 films, including iconic titles like Sholay and Chupke Chupke, passed away in Mumbai following a prolonged illness. The 84-year-old had been hospitalized for breathing difficulties prior to his demise.

Born in Jaipur in 1941, Asrani trained at the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and made his film debut in 1969. Over the decades, he won accolades, including Filmfare Awards, for his versatile performances spanning comedy and character roles.

His death prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, actors Akshay Kumar, and Anupam Kher were among those who remembered Asrani’s contribution to Indian cinema and his indelible presence on screen.

As per his wishes, Asrani was cremated privately, marking the end of a remarkable era in Bollywood comedy.
