Tokyo, January 03,2024 – The death toll in the central Japanese prefecture of Ishikawa has surged to 62 as of 8 a.m. local time on Wednesday, following a series of robust earthquakes that struck the central Japan region and its vicinity. Reports of aftershocks persist, along with additional damage assessments.
At 10:54 a.m. local time on Wednesday, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake occurred off the Noto Peninsula, registering an upper 5 on the intensity scale, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The agency has been actively monitoring the seismic activity in the region.
Earlier this week, a sequence of powerful earthquakes, including a preliminary 7.6-magnitude tremor, rattled the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture. Officially named the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake by the JMA, the seismic events prompted concerns and emergency responses.
Although the JMA has lifted all tsunami advisories along the Sea of Japan following the recent quake, meteorological authorities have issued warnings about the potential for strong aftershocks in the upcoming week. The heightened risk is particularly expected over the next two to three days.
The situation continues to unfold, with residents and authorities on high alert as aftershocks persist, and relief efforts are underway to address the increasing toll of the seismic events on the affected communities.
