The Israeli military has escalated its air and ground operations in Gaza, launching over 430 strikes since March 18, according to official statements. The latest offensive marks the collapse of a two-month ceasefire, with the military asserting that all targeted locations were linked to terrorist activities. However, the humanitarian impact has been severe, with Gaza’s health authorities reporting around 830 deaths since hostilities resumed. While no Israeli casualties have been confirmed in this phase, the overall death toll in Gaza since the conflict began on October 7, 2023, has exceeded 50,000. The war began after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people.
Beyond Gaza, Israel has also expanded its operations to Syria and Lebanon, intensifying its regional military campaign. On Saturday, Israeli forces targeted over 40 Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, stating that these strikes were a response to rocket fire from Lebanon toward the Galilee region. Despite a fragile ceasefire in place since November, the cross-border violence between Israel and Hezbollah has continued, with repeated exchanges of fire. Reports indicate that Israel has carried out dozens of additional airstrikes in Lebanon, warning of continued operations against Hezbollah.
Meanwhile, Israel’s air defense systems have been actively engaged in intercepting missile attacks. Since the end of the Gaza truce last Tuesday, 14 missiles have been shot down by Israeli aerial defense systems. These included six surface-to-surface missiles launched from Yemen, three rockets fired from Lebanon, and five from the Gaza Strip. The situation remains highly volatile, with growing concerns over a potential expansion of hostilities beyond the immediate region.
As the military operations continue, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has worsened significantly. International aid organizations have raised alarms over acute shortages of food, medical supplies, and essential resources due to the relentless airstrikes and border restrictions. The United Nations and multiple global entities have called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a renewed push for diplomatic negotiations. However, Israel has maintained its stance that its military campaign against Hamas and Hezbollah will persist until all security threats are neutralized.
Diplomatic efforts led by Egypt and Qatar are ongoing, with mediators attempting to broker another ceasefire. However, given the current intensity of the conflict, a return to negotiations appears unlikely in the near future. The recent developments have fueled fears of a wider regional war, particularly as Israel continues military operations across multiple fronts.
