Typhoon Gaemi Triggers Evacuations and Factory Closures in Northeast China

Over 27,000 Evacuated and Industrial Operations Suspended Amid Severe Weather

Beijing, July 27 2024 : Typhoon Gaemi has led to the evacuation of more than 27,000 people and the suspension of hundreds of factories in northeast China, as reported by Xinhua news agency on Saturday. The typhoon, the most powerful storm to impact China this year, made landfall in the coastal Fujian province on Friday, bringing with it heavy rains and strong winds.

The storm has caused significant disruptions, including rising water levels in 40 reservoirs across Liaoning province, which is expected to experience torrential rain starting early Sunday and continuing through Tuesday. In response to the severe weather, hundreds of chemical and mining companies in the region have halted operations, and nearby residents have been relocated to mitigate flood risks.

Typhoon Gaemi, which previously caused dozens of fatalities in Taiwan and exacerbated seasonal rains in the Philippines, has also impacted nearly 630,000 people in Fujian province. Approximately half of those affected have been relocated to safer areas, according to Xinhua.

The ongoing storm underscores the severe impact of extreme weather events, with widespread evacuations and industrial shutdowns highlighting the extensive measures required to manage such disasters.
