The Secret Service’s admission that it turned down requests for additional resources for former President Donald Trump’s security detail before his recent assassination attempt has stirred significant controversy. The agency had previously denied that such requests were made or rejected. This revelation, coupled with the fact that the Secret Service faced criticism for how it managed local law enforcement resources and the security perimeter during the Butler rally, has intensified scrutiny on the agency’s handling of the incident.
The shooting, which resulted in Trump being wounded and one rally attendee killed, has led to calls for an independent review and increased criticism of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle. The Secret Service has defended its actions by citing the limitations of its resources and its efforts to compensate with state and local law enforcement support.
President Joe Biden and several Republicans have weighed in on the situation, with Biden calling for an independent review and some Republicans demanding Cheatle’s resignation. Despite the controversy, Trump himself publicly praised the Secret Service for their response to the attack.
