Rani Mukerji Dedicates First National Film Award in 30 Years to Mothers for Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway

Actor Rani Mukerji has achieved a significant career milestone by winning her first National Film Award in three decades for her powerful performance in the 2023 legal drama Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. Overwhelmed by the recognition, Rani shared a heartfelt statement dedicating the award to mothers around the world.

“This is the first ever National Award in my 30-year career,” said the actor. “I’m overwhelmed and deeply honoured. I thank the National Award jury for acknowledging my work in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. I share this award with my entire team – producers Nikkhil Advani, Monisha Advani, Madhu Bhojwani, director Ashima Chibber, and everyone involved in this special project that celebrates the resilience of motherhood.”

Rani went on to reflect on the emotional connection she felt with the story and the character she portrayed: “I dedicate this National Award to all the incredible mothers of this world. There is nothing like a mother’s love and her ferocity to protect her own. The story of this Indian immigrant mother who took on a nation for her child shook me deeply. I truly realised the power of a mother’s love after becoming one myself.”

Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway is based on the real-life case of Sagarika Chakraborty, whose children were taken away by Norwegian child welfare services in 2011, leading to a diplomatic standoff between India and Norway. The film sheds light on the legal and emotional battle fought by an Indian mother in a foreign land.

Rani concluded her statement by thanking her global fan base: “To all my fans who have supported me unconditionally for 30 years — your love has kept me going. Without you, I wouldn’t be who I am today.”

The award and her emotional speech underscore the film’s impact and Rani Mukerji’s lasting legacy as one of Bollywood’s most versatile and beloved performers.
