Deepika Padukone’s streak with big-banner films appears to have hit another roadblock. After her exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit earlier this year, the actor has now been officially dropped from Kalki 2898 AD’s sequel.
On Thursday (September 18), Vyjayanthi Movies issued a statement on X confirming the development. The note read,
“This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like @Kalki2898AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works.”
The announcement sparked an immediate wave of speculation across social media. Netizens debated why an actor who played such a central role in the first film was suddenly out of the sequel. Some questioned whether it was due to “unreasonable demands,” “tight schedules,” or even “exorbitant remuneration.”
One user wrote, “This reflects very poorly on @deepikapadukone that after #SandeepVanga, another reputed production house has thrown her out of their movie. The optics are terrible. Deepika must clarify honestly, or else her career will go into a permanent tailspin.”
Others, however, focused on the story, pointing out how crucial her character was to the original. “But the entire film is centred around her — the whole story is about saving her! If her elimination doesn’t affect the script, then it’s fine,” another fan reasoned.
Theories also swirled about a possible rift with co-star Prabhas, given her back-to-back exits from Spirit and now Kalki 2. Fans expressed shock at what they called “serious behind-the-scenes drama.”
Meanwhile, chatter about possible replacements has taken over fandom discussions. Suggestions included Shraddha Kapoor, Rukmini Vasanth, and Anushka Shetty as potential successors to the role.
For now, the production house is framing the exit as an issue of “partnership and commitment.” But with two high-profile walkouts in quick succession, Deepika Padukone’s choices — and their impact on her career trajectory — remain under sharp scrutiny.
