Johannesburg, October 10, 2026: With fewer than 100 days remaining until the fifth season of the SA20 gets underway, newly signed players are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to compete in South Africa’s premier T20 league. Season 5 is scheduled to begin on January 17, 2027, following the player auction held on October 7.
Among the latest recruits, Jason Rowles, Temba Bavuma, Oliver Whitehead and Craig Overton have expressed their excitement about joining their respective franchises, highlighting the opportunity to play in front of passionate home crowds and learn from experienced teammates and coaches.
Jason Rowles, the biggest signing of the Season 5 auction, is looking forward to representing his hometown franchise, Joburg Super Kings, at the Wanderers.
Calling the selection a dream come true, Rowles said the tournament offered an incredible opportunity to develop his game alongside accomplished players and coaches.
“I can’t wait to get the season started and learn from all the coaches and players,” he said.
Under-23 all-rounder Oliver Whitehead is excited about joining MI Cape Town, the champions of Season 3. Having attended school near Newlands, the young player is particularly eager to experience the atmosphere at the iconic venue.
“I am super stoked to be picked up by MI Cape Town for the 2027 season,” Whitehead said, adding that he was looking forward to playing in front of packed Newlands crowds.
Pretoria Capitals have secured the services of South Africa’s Test and ODI captain Temba Bavuma, who returns to the league after missing the previous two seasons.
The 36-year-old brings significant leadership experience, having guided South Africa to the World Test Championship title. Pretoria Capitals, runners-up twice in four seasons, will hope his experience helps them secure their maiden championship.
“It’s cool to be back in the mix with the guys,” Bavuma said, expressing his excitement about joining the team led by Keshav Maharaj.
“Hopefully we’ll be able to go all the way next year,” he added.
English all-rounder Craig Overton will return to Sunrisers Eastern Cape for the fifth season. The franchise has enjoyed considerable success, and Overton is eager to reunite with the squad and experience the atmosphere at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.
Overton recalled his previous stint with the team, praising the enthusiastic support of the Orange Army and the stadium band.
He also expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to compete for another title, with Sunrisers Eastern Cape targeting their fourth trophy in five seasons.
The upcoming season will begin with a high-profile rematch of the Season 4 final, as defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape face Pretoria Capitals at St George’s Park on January 17, 2027.
With tickets expected to be in high demand, fans have been encouraged to pre-register through the SA20 website. Tickets for the fifth season are scheduled to go on sale to the general public on November 5.
With fresh auction signings, experienced international players and a competitive opening fixture, Season 5 is shaping up to be another major chapter in the SA20 tournament.
