Delhi Police Denies Permission for CJP Protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10

Police cite short notice, prohibitory orders and alleged violations of rules during previous demonstrations

New Delhi, October 9: Delhi Police has denied permission to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10, citing short notice, prohibitory provisions in force in the New Delhi area and alleged violations of rules during previous demonstrations.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Joint Commissioner of Police Nupur Prasad said the organisation had submitted its request too close to the proposed date. According to police, the prescribed guidelines require such intimation to be submitted at least 10 days before the planned protest.

The proposed demonstration was intended to demand accountability from Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

Police cite previous conduct

Prasad said Delhi Police had received an application from Saurav Das, co-convener of the CJP, regarding the proposed protest at Jantar Mantar.

Explaining the decision, she said prohibitory provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) remained in force in the New Delhi area. She also alleged that the organisation had failed to comply with lawful directions and its own undertakings during an earlier protest for which permission had been granted.

Delhi Police maintained that the request for the October 10 demonstration could not be approved under the prevailing circumstances.

Security arrangements ahead of protest date

The denial comes amid heightened security preparations in the national capital ahead of the proposed demonstration. Delhi Police had also asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to consider restricting entry and exit at 57 metro stations from 9 pm on October 9, citing concerns about crowd movement towards sensitive locations.

The proposed restrictions were intended to remain in place through October 10, subject to the prevailing security situation.

The police have cited compliance with established procedures and the need to maintain public order as reasons for their decision regarding the CJP protest.
