New Delhi, September 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with recipients of the National Teachers’ Day Awards in New Delhi and called on educators to play a broader role in shaping students beyond classroom lessons and textbooks.
During the interaction, Modi said teachers should focus not only on academic learning but also on preserving the innocence, curiosity and creativity of children. He emphasised that educators need to connect with students as part of their everyday lives if they want to bring meaningful changes in their development.
The Prime Minister also raised concerns over the increasing amount of time children spend on digital screens. He encouraged teachers to motivate students to participate in sports, outdoor activities and creative interests as a way of promoting healthier habits and reducing excessive screen dependence.
PM Modi Highlights Health and Social Concerns
Modi also discussed the importance of greater awareness about breast cancer and noted that more women are voluntarily opting for health screenings, which he said reflects increased awareness about preventive healthcare.
Addressing the issue of substance abuse, the Prime Minister stressed the need for sustained awareness campaigns among children and young people. He cautioned that youngsters can sometimes become exposed to harmful substances without fully understanding their consequences.
He also highlighted the role of the National Education Policy in making education more practical. Modi encouraged educators to expose students to experiences beyond conventional classrooms and help them develop an understanding of real-world skills and different forms of work.
82 Educators Selected for National Teachers’ Day Awards
A total of 82 teachers and educators have been chosen for this year’s National Teachers’ Day Awards across three departments.
The awardees include 48 teachers from the Department of School Education and Literacy, 21 teachers and faculty members from higher educational institutions and polytechnics, and 13 skill trainers from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
During the interaction, recipients spoke about their teaching experiences and shared innovative methods they have introduced to make education more interactive and interesting for students.
Modi said Teachers’ Day provides an opportunity to recognise the lasting contribution of educators to society. He also paid tribute to Bharat Ratna Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, whose birth anniversary is observed as Teachers’ Day in India.
