Chester, Pennsylvania, August 20, 2026; Lionel Messi returned to the scoresheet for Inter Miami on Wednesday, marking an emotional moment as he netted his first goal since the death of his father, Jorge Messi, earlier this month.
Messi struck in the 26th minute during Miami’s Major League Soccer clash against Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park. The Argentine forward created space for himself before sending a left-footed effort into the net to give Inter Miami a 2-1 advantage.
His teammates immediately gathered around him to celebrate the goal, which came amid a difficult period for the 39-year-old football star following the loss of his father.
Philadelphia Union fought back after the interval, with Neil Pierre finding the equaliser in the 58th minute to secure a 2-2 result.
The draw was significant for Inter Miami as it halted a three-game losing streak for the reigning MLS Cup champions.
Jorge Messi, 68, died in Rosario earlier this month following a prolonged illness. His death deeply affected the Argentine captain, who had previously spoken about his father’s constant encouragement throughout his football career.
In a tribute shared after his father’s passing, Messi remembered Jorge’s support and revealed that his father had continued encouraging him to feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite his deteriorating health.
Messi had hoped his father would recover sufficiently to attend the tournament’s final. Argentina eventually reached the title match but were beaten by Spain, ending their hopes of retaining the World Cup.
The goal against Philadelphia therefore carried added emotional significance for Messi, coming during his first match since his father’s death and helping Miami bring an end to its difficult run of results.
