Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Orders Closure of 717 Liquor Shops Near Schools and Religious Places

State government moves to restrict alcohol outlets within sensitive zones to strengthen public welfare measures

Chennai, May 12, 2026: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has directed the closure of 717 state run TASMAC liquor shops located within 500 metres of educational institutions and places of worship across the state.

The decision has been issued as part of a broader initiative aimed at regulating the presence of alcohol outlets in sensitive public areas and improving the social environment around schools, colleges, and religious sites.

According to the government directive, all identified outlets must be shut down within a two week period. Authorities have been tasked with ensuring smooth implementation of the order across districts.

Officials indicated that the move is intended to address long standing public concerns regarding the proximity of liquor shops to community spaces and to reinforce efforts toward safer and more regulated urban and semi urban zones.

The action is being viewed as a significant policy step balancing regulatory enforcement with social considerations across Tamil Nadu.
