Explosion Near BJP Office in Chandigarh Sparks Security Alert; NIA Launches Investigation

Chandigarh

A low-intensity explosion outside the Punjab unit office of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Chandigarh on Wednesday evening caused alarm in the area, though no injuries were reported, officials confirmed.

According to preliminary findings, an improvised explosive device was reportedly thrown near the premises located in Sector 37, a busy locality that houses several important buildings and public facilities.

Soon after the incident, the National Investigation Agency stepped in to examine the case. Local police, along with forensic experts, have begun collecting evidence from the site to determine the nature and origin of the explosive.

Senior police officials stated that an FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Explosives Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and multiple agencies are working jointly on the investigation.

Suspected Terror Angle Under Scrutiny

A statement allegedly issued by Babbar Khalsa International claiming responsibility for the blast is being verified by authorities. Investigators are also examining a video circulating online, which appears to show an individual throwing an explosive object before fleeing the scene with an accomplice.

Officials cautioned that the authenticity of the video and the claim has not yet been confirmed.

While there were no injuries, minor damage to vehicles and nearby property was reported. A parked two-wheeler and a car sustained impact, and visible marks were found on surrounding walls.

Party representatives said the sound of the explosion caused panic among staff members, who immediately informed law enforcement agencies.

State leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party described the incident as a serious security lapse and linked it to a broader pattern of recent disturbances in Punjab.

Meanwhile, Bhagwant Mann responded by criticizing opposition parties for blaming the state government for multiple issues, asserting that such accusations were politically motivated.

Rising Concerns Over Security

The incident comes amid heightened concerns over security in the region, following recent threats targeting public institutions and earlier attacks involving explosive devices.

Authorities have increased surveillance across Chandigarh and adjoining areas as investigations continue.
