Madhya Pradesh Tehsildar Taken into Custody Over 2021 Flood Relief Irregularities

Amita Singh Tomar Arrested for Alleged Misuse of Disaster Funds

Bhopal, March 27, 2026: A senior revenue officer in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district was arrested on Thursday in connection with financial irregularities uncovered in relief funds disbursed during the 2021 floods. The officer, Amita Singh Tomar, had previously gained public attention for participating in a popular quiz show, but now faces allegations of misappropriating crores intended for flood victims.

Authorities said Tomar was taken into custody from Gwalior following an investigation that revealed discrepancies in fund distribution under the Baroda tehsil relief program. She was presented in the Sheopur court before being lodged in the women’s correctional facility in nearby Shivpuri district.

The investigation, led by local police and supported by special teams, identified multiple irregularities in the transfer of relief funds. Officials confirmed that the total misappropriated amount is approximately ₹2.5 crore, with Tomar among more than 100 individuals under scrutiny, including other revenue officers and field staff.

According to the police, preliminary audits had flagged unusual transactions in accounts set up for relief disbursement, prompting a detailed inquiry. The investigation revealed significant evidence implicating Tomar in the alleged financial misconduct.

Authorities stressed that the arrest follows due process, with courts and senior officials informed at each stage. Tomar had earlier sought anticipatory bail from higher courts, but her requests were rejected, allowing law enforcement to take action.

Police also highlighted that the ongoing investigation aims to trace all diverted funds and ensure accountability across the administrative chain involved in relief distribution.

The case has drawn public attention due to the officer’s previous media recognition, and officials emphasized that fame or prior visibility would not influence the legal proceedings.

Investigators noted that the action serves as a reminder of strict scrutiny on public funds, especially those allocated for disaster relief, and authorities reiterated their commitment to transparency and recovery of misappropriated resources.

Meanwhile, local administrative offices are reviewing internal processes to prevent recurrence of such irregularities and strengthen oversight in relief programs.

The authorities confirmed that further arrests or charges may follow as the investigation progresses, signaling continued efforts to hold all responsible parties accountable.
