Petroleum Ministry Reassures Public Fuel Supplies Are Stable Despite Panic Buying and Global Tensions

New Delhi, 26 March 2026 – The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has issued a strong assurance that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)anywhere in the country, amid recent public concern and reports of long queues at fuel stations in some cities. The government has appealed to citizens to avoid panic buying and not be swayed by misinformation.

Officials explained that adequate stocks of all major fuels are available across retail outlets nationwide, with storage and distribution systems functioning normally. In several states, authorities have confirmed that fuel stocks are sufficient to meet current demand, even as public anxiety has risen over global geopolitical tensions affecting energy markets.

The Petroleum Ministry said the recent surge in demand at some fuel pumps appears to be driven largely by rumours rather than actual supply disruptions. Despite the reassuring supply situation, temporary “no stock” notices on some pumps and gas agencies were reportedly due to local delivery delays rather than an actual shortage.

State governments have echoed the centre’s message. In Telangana, authorities stated that petroleum and LPG supplies are abundant, with buffer stocks and extra tanker deliveries arranged to ensure continuous availability. Officials urged people not to hoard and highlighted steps to prevent misuse and illegal storage.

Similarly, in Uttar Pradesh, government coordinators confirmed that adequate LPG cylinders and fuel supplies are being maintained, with detailed monitoring of distribution points and appeals to the public to book refills only when needed.

The assurances come as India maintains robust fuel management systems and buffer stocks to cushion against external shocks. Industry sources say that strategic reserves and routine supply arrangements are designed to keep essential fuels flowing under a range of conditions, including geopolitical uncertainty.

Oil marketing companies, including public sector firms responsible for the bulk of fuel distribution, have reiterated that petrol, diesel, LPG, kerosene, and other petroleum products are being delivered to outlets as normal, with no interruptions to supply chains.

Experts note that panic buying can itself create artificial shortages at the local level, as stations run temporarily short before the next delivery arrives. The government’s clarifications aim to calm public concerns and prevent unnecessary stockpiling that could strain distribution networks.

Authorities have also reminded the public that fuel prices in India are deregulated and supply is managed through a combination of domestic production, imports, and strategic reserves, ensuring that essential fuels remain accessible even amid fluctuating global conditions.
