Kalyan-Dombivli Records First COVID-19 Death in Maharashtra

New Delhi : The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) in Maharashtra’s Thane district has confirmed its first COVID-19 fatality amid a recent surge in coronavirus infections across parts of the state, including the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

According to Dr. Deepa Shukla, the officer in charge of KDMC’s Medical Health Department, the deceased was a woman who had tested positive for COVID-19 and was receiving treatment at a local hospital. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to the virus, marking the first official COVID-19-related death in the region during this wave.

Dr. Shukla revealed that a total of four cases had been identified within the municipal limits over the past few days, signalling a fresh resurgence of the virus in the area. Among the four cases, one patient with mild symptoms has already been discharged after successful treatment, and another is currently undergoing care in a private hospital. The fourth patient has been shifted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa for advanced medical attention.

The health department is on alert following this development, especially as other parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Pune, and Thane, have started witnessing a marginal uptick in COVID-19 cases. The local administration has urged citizens to remain vigilant and follow COVID-appropriate behaviour, such as wearing masks in crowded places, maintaining hand hygiene, and avoiding unnecessary gatherings.

The KDMC has initiated contact tracing and containment measures in the affected areas to prevent further transmission. Teams have been deployed to sanitize public spaces and monitor health conditions in densely populated localities.

State health officials have also been instructed to ensure adequate preparedness in hospitals, including the availability of oxygen beds, medicines, and COVID-19 testing kits. While the overall positivity rate remains low, authorities are closely monitoring the evolving situation and may introduce stricter public health measures if the cases continue to rise.

Meanwhile, health experts are emphasizing the importance of booster vaccinations, particularly for the elderly and those with comorbidities. Citizens who have not yet taken their precautionary doses are being encouraged to do so at the earliest.
