Amritsar Blast: Suspected Terrorist Injured as Authorities Probe Possible Terror Angle

Amritsar : A powerful explosion rocked the Majitha Road Bypass area of Punjab’s Amritsar on Tuesday morning, injuring a suspected terrorist and prompting a high-level investigation into the possibility of a terror plot. The blast occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m., sending panic across the vicinity, which is typically busy during the early hours.

Initially, officials treated the incident as a case of mishandling explosive materials. However, with the recovery of suspicious items from the site and early indications of deliberate intent, authorities are now actively probing a terror angle. Security forces and forensic teams swiftly cordoned off the area and began collecting evidence from the scene.

The individual injured in the blast is currently under police custody and receiving treatment at a secure medical facility. His identity has not been officially released, but sources within the Punjab Police confirm that he is suspected to have ties to extremist elements and may have been handling explosives meant for an attack or transportation.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav stated that initial forensic reports and inputs from central intelligence agencies suggest the possibility of a larger plot. “We are not ruling out anything at this stage. Given the background of heightened security threats in the border state, any incident involving explosives warrants a thorough investigation,” he said.

Security has been heightened across Amritsar and neighboring areas, especially at key public installations, railway stations, and religious sites. Bomb disposal squads and anti-terror units have been put on alert. Surveillance footage from nearby CCTV cameras is being analyzed to trace the movements of the injured suspect and any possible accomplices.

This incident comes amid rising concerns over the resurgence of sleeper cells and the smuggling of explosives and arms through the international border. Punjab, due to its proximity to Pakistan and past history of militancy, remains a vulnerable point for cross-border terrorism and infiltration.

Officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) have also joined the probe. According to sources, digital devices, mobile phones, and documents recovered from the site could offer more clues about the suspect’s network and possible affiliations.
