Jalandhar: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Raman Arora was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) on Friday in connection with an alleged corruption case, triggering a political stir in the state. Arora, who represents the Jalandhar Central constituency, was taken into custody by vigilance officials following preliminary investigations into charges of financial irregularities.
According to official sources, the arrest was made after the Vigilance Bureau conducted inquiries into Arora’s alleged involvement in corruption-related activities during his tenure. Soon after the arrest, the Bureau also carried out a search operation at his residence in Jalandhar. Details of the case, including the exact nature of the charges, are yet to be made public, but officials hinted that the allegations relate to misuse of power and financial misconduct.
The AAP leadership in Punjab has not yet issued a formal statement on Arora’s arrest. However, party insiders suggest that the matter is being reviewed internally, and the party is expected to release an official response after consulting with senior leaders in Delhi.
Arora, a prominent figure in Jalandhar’s political landscape, had won the Jalandhar Central seat in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections by defeating Congress veteran Rajinder Beri. Known for his close association with senior AAP leaders in the state, his arrest could prove to be a political setback for the ruling party in Punjab, which has consistently maintained its stance on zero tolerance for corruption.
Meanwhile, opposition parties in the state wasted no time in targeting AAP. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring demanded that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann clarify his party’s position on the issue and take action if the charges against Arora are proven. The Shiromani Akali Dal also called for an impartial investigation and accused AAP of hypocrisy, claiming that many of its leaders were “neck-deep” in corruption despite their public posturing.
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau, for its part, has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the case. A senior official said that the matter is under active investigation and that further disclosures will be made in due course based on the evidence gathered.
