Manipur : In a significant counter-insurgency operation, the Eastern Command of the Indian Army gunned down 10 cadres of a suspected hill-based insurgent group in the New Samtal area of Khengjoy Sub-division under Chandel district in Manipur. The operation, carried out on Wednesday, follows credible intelligence inputs about the presence of armed insurgents in the region.
In a statement shared via social media, the Eastern Command said the army unit acted swiftly on specific intelligence and launched an operation in the dense and remote area. During the operation, the suspected insurgents reportedly opened fire on the security forces, prompting a strong retaliatory response. In the ensuing exchange of fire, 10 insurgents were killed.
The army also confirmed the recovery of a significant cache of arms and ammunition from the site. Although the exact inventory of recovered items has not been officially disclosed, sources suggest that the seizure includes automatic rifles, grenades, and tactical gear used by the insurgents.
Preliminary identification of the slain insurgents suggests they were members of a militant group active in the hill districts of Manipur and operating close to the India-Myanmar international border. These insurgent outfits have long been accused of engaging in extortion, arms smuggling, and attacks on security forces in the border regions.
The operation is part of the Indian Army’s intensified efforts to restore stability in Manipur, a state grappling with ethnic tensions and insurgency-related violence over the past year. While relative calm has been maintained in the valley areas, several districts in the hills continue to witness intermittent clashes and militant activity.
As of the time of reporting, search and combing operations were still underway in and around New Samtal to ensure the area is clear of any remaining hostile elements. Army and paramilitary reinforcements have been deployed to bolster security and prevent potential retaliation from insurgent groups.
This latest action underscores the Indian Army’s continued commitment to maintaining peace and territorial integrity along India’s northeastern borders. The Army has reiterated that it remains vigilant and prepared to act decisively against any elements attempting to destabilize the region.
