600 Schools Under Scanner in Delhi Over Fee Irregularities

New Delhi : In response to a surge in complaints regarding arbitrary and excessive fee hikes, the Delhi government has launched an extensive inspection drive across private schools in the national capital. More than 600 private unaided schools have already been inspected, and over 10 institutions have been issued showcause notices, according to officials from the Directorate of Education (DoE).

The inspections follow growing concerns from parents and civil society groups over sudden and unjustified increases in school fees. The DoE, in a statement released on Wednesday, confirmed that district-level committees have been constituted to probe these complaints. These committees are being headed by Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) and comprise Deputy Directors of Education, Accounts Officers, and Principals of government schools, ensuring thorough and impartial scrutiny.

The focus of the investigation has been on private unaided schools, including those explicitly mentioned in formal complaints. “The inspection process is being carried out on a priority basis, especially for schools where there is significant evidence of fee-related malpractice,” the statement said.

Officials emphasized that the department is strictly monitoring schools that have allegedly increased fees with the intent to generate profit, a clear violation of existing regulations. In such cases, schools have been issued showcause notices under Section 24(3) of the Delhi School Education Act and Rules (DSEAR), 1973. This section empowers the authorities to take action against institutions indulging in exploitative financial practices.

The Delhi government is also weighing stricter penalties in severe cases, which could include the withdrawal of recognition or even government takeover of school management. “Educational institutions must operate with integrity and transparency. Profit-making cannot be the motive behind fee structures,” a senior official noted.

The government’s proactive stance has drawn praise from several parent associations, who have long demanded regulatory oversight in the private education sector. The move is also in line with the broader educational reforms being undertaken to ensure equitable access to quality education in Delhi.
