Murshidabad Violence Sparks Political Row; BJP Appeals to Governor

Kolkata : Amid escalating tensions in Murshidabad and parts of West Bengal over protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged West Bengal Governor Dr. C. V. Ananda Bose to intervene in the matter and ensure the restoration of peace and law and order in the affected areas.

The BJP has expressed serious concern over the violence that broke out in various pockets of Murshidabad, including Samsherganj, Suti, and Jangipur, over the past week. BJP state president Dr. Sukanta Majumdar visited relief camps set up in Baisnabnagar, Malda district, where hundreds of residents from violence-hit areas have taken shelter. Speaking to the media, Dr. Majumdar stated that the party would also approach the Calcutta High Court seeking an extension of the Border Security Force (BSF) deployment in the region to stabilize the situation.

Meanwhile, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court by advocate Shashank Shekhar Jha, requesting a court-monitored investigation into the Murshidabad violence by a Special Investigation Team (SIT). The petitioner emphasized the need for impartial inquiry and protection of affected citizens.

In response to the ongoing unrest, Additional Director General (ADG) of BSF Eastern Command, Ravi Gandhi, visited Samsherganj on Sunday and held a high-level review meeting with West Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar, ADG South Bengal Supratim Sarkar, and other senior police officials from affected districts, including Jangipur. Following the meeting, ADG Gandhi assured that the BSF and state police would work jointly to maintain peace and ensure people’s safety.

Tensions remain high not only in Murshidabad but have also spilled over to the Bhangar area of South 24 Parganas district, where violent protests erupted on Sunday. Protesters clashed with police, damaged vehicles, and set several on fire. In the Kashipur area, a mob allegedly attacked nine policemen and torched their motorcycles. Police have arrested eight individuals in connection with the incident, and further investigations are underway.
