MP Government Bans Liquor in Religious Cities, Expands Alcohol-Free Zones

Madhya Pradesh : A ban on liquor in 19 religious cities and areas under select gram panchayats, including Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, and Maihar, comes into effect today. The prohibition, aimed at preserving the spiritual significance of these locations, ensures that all liquor shops and bars cease operations within the designated urban and rural limits.

The affected cities include Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, Mandleshwar, Orchha, Maihar, Chitrakoot, Datia, Panna, Mandla, Multai, Mandsaur, and Amarkantak. Additionally, the ban extends to the gram panchayat areas of Salkanpur, Kundalpur, Bandakpur, Barmankalan, Barmankhurd, and Linga. With this decision, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has declared these regions completely sacred, making them alcohol-free zones to uphold their religious and cultural sanctity.

The decision to enforce the liquor ban was taken during a cabinet meeting in Maheshwar on January 24, 2025. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, while announcing the move, emphasized that the prohibition is a historic step toward protecting the spiritual essence of these places and reducing alcohol consumption in religiously significant areas. He further stated that this move aligns with the sentiments of the local communities and religious leaders who have long demanded restrictions on liquor sales in these sacred locations.

The implementation of this policy is expected to have significant economic and social impacts. While liquor shop owners in the affected regions have expressed concerns over potential business losses, the state government has assured alternative economic measures to balance the revenue deficit. To compensate for the loss of excise duty from the closed liquor shops, the government has increased liquor prices in other parts of the state. Additionally, rehabilitation schemes for liquor shop owners and employees affected by the ban are also under discussion.

Religious leaders and devotees have welcomed the decision, praising it as a progressive move that aligns with the core values of these sacred sites. Many temples and religious organizations in these cities have supported the ban, stating that it will contribute to a cleaner and more peaceful atmosphere for pilgrims and tourists alike.

Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to ensure strict adherence to the ban. Special teams have been deployed to prevent illegal liquor trade, and violators will face stringent penalties. The state administration has also set up a helpline for citizens to report any violations of the liquor ban.
