Opposition Attacks BJP Over Silence on Kunal Kamra’s Summons for PM Modi Remark

The Opposition has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for maintaining silence on comedian Kunal Kamra‘s joke about Prime Minister Narendra Modi while reacting strongly to his parody song, which allegedly mocked Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The controversy intensified as the Mumbai Police issued a second summons to Kamra, directing him to appear for questioning regarding a defamation case filed against him.

According to reports, the first summons was issued on Tuesday, with police beginning an investigation into the case. However, Kamra, through his legal representatives, has requested a week’s time to respond and appear before the authorities. The stand-up comedian has been known for his sharp political satire and has previously faced legal action over his remarks against government figures.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve has questioned the BJP’s selective outrage, pointing out the party’s inaction over Kamra’s direct criticism of Prime Minister Modi while swiftly reacting to his parody song. Danve, speaking at the Maharashtra legislative council complex after the Budget session, stated, “Kunal Kamra directly criticized Prime Minister Modi in his stand-up show, and the BJP remained silent. However, when a parody song surfaced, which did not even mention Eknath Shinde by name, the party reacted strongly.”

Danve further alleged that the BJP is using Shinde as a shield to suppress criticism and target dissenters. “It seems clear that the BJP is attempting to protect its image by making Shinde the focal point of the controversy. The entire episode raises concerns about freedom of speech and selective application of legal scrutiny,” he added.

Kamra’s case has reignited discussions on the limitations placed on satirical content and free speech in India. While stand-up comedy and political satire have often been used to critique those in power, comedians like Kamra have frequently found themselves entangled in legal battles over their performances.

Legal experts suggest that the case against Kamra will test the boundaries of free speech under Indian law. Many opposition leaders and activists argue that such actions set a dangerous precedent for stifling criticism against political figures. Meanwhile, Kamra’s supporters and fellow comedians have come forward in his defense, highlighting the growing crackdown on artistic and satirical expression.
