Telangana SLBC Tunnel Collapse: Rescuers Recover Another Body

Telangana : In Telangana, rescuers have recovered another body from the partially collapsed Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) Tunnel project in Nagarkurnool district after more than a month of extensive search operations. District Collector Badavath Santhosh informed the media that the body was located during a search effort conducted yesterday. This brings the total number of bodies recovered so far to two.

The deceased has been identified as Manoj Kumar, an engineer from Uttar Pradesh who was working with the contract firm overseeing the tunnel project. Following standard procedures, the body has been shifted to a government hospital for post-mortem and further formalities. An official statement confirmed that the mortal remains would be sent to his native place in Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has reiterated his commitment to the ongoing rescue mission and has directed authorities to continue the search operation until all those trapped inside the collapsed tunnel are located. The incident, which occurred last month, left eight workers—including two engineers—trapped inside the tunnel, prompting large-scale rescue and relief efforts.

The SLBC Tunnel project, a crucial infrastructure development meant to improve water supply in the region, has been under scrutiny following the collapse. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the structural failure, and state authorities are assessing safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Rescue teams comprising experts from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and specialized tunnel engineers have been working tirelessly to clear debris and access the trapped individuals. However, the challenging terrain and tunnel conditions have slowed progress, requiring the use of advanced equipment and meticulous excavation techniques.

Family members of the trapped workers have been anxiously awaiting updates, with the state government assuring them of all necessary support. Compensation and relief measures for the victims’ families are also being discussed, with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy emphasizing the need for swift action in providing assistance to those affected.

As rescue operations continue, authorities remain hopeful of locating the remaining trapped workers. The state government has assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and accountability will be established for any lapses in construction safety standards. Meanwhile, experts in tunnel engineering and disaster management are analyzing the incident to derive key learnings for future projects.
