Delhi MCD Allocates ₹800 Crore for Regularisation of 12,000 Contractual Employees

New Delhi : The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has allocated ₹800 crore in its budget for the regularisation of 12,000 contractual employees, a long-pending demand that has now been approved. The decision was taken during a special MCD meeting, where the Revised Budget Estimates for 2024-25 and the Budget Estimates for 2025-26 were passed despite uproarious scenes between councillors from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The meeting, held at the Civic Centre, witnessed chaotic moments as AAP and BJP councillors engaged in heated exchanges, climbed tables and chairs, and raised slogans against each other. Despite the disruptions, the House approved the proposal to earmark ₹800 crore for the salaries and benefits of contractual employees who will now be regularised under the new policy.

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to hail the decision. “Big news for the 12,000 temporary employees of the Delhi Municipal Corporation. The Aam Aadmi Party government in the corporation has allocated ₹800 crore in the budget, fulfilling their long-pending demand. Now, all these employees will be regularised—something only the Aam Aadmi Party could achieve. Congratulations to all the employees and their families,” Kejriwal wrote.

MCD Mayor Shelly Oberoi also welcomed the development, stating that the decision to regularise contractual employees reflects the AAP-led administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare. “The employees have waited for years for this moment, and we are ensuring that their hard work and dedication are recognised. This is a historic decision for thousands of families in Delhi,” she said.

The opposition BJP, however, criticized the move, calling it a political stunt ahead of the municipal polls. Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva alleged that the Kejriwal government had failed to fulfil its promises in the past and was making last-minute announcements to garner votes. “They have made big claims before, but we will see if this is actually implemented or remains just another false promise,” Sachdeva said.

The MCD has been struggling with financial constraints, and the allocation of ₹800 crore for regularisation is seen as a major financial commitment. However, AAP leaders claim that the move will bring stability to the workforce and improve service delivery in civic administration.
