Pune : A shocking incident has come to light where a 26-year-old woman was raped inside a stationary state transport bus at the Swargate bus stand in Pune. The crime, which has sparked outrage across Maharashtra and the nation, was confirmed by Pune police on Wednesday.
Officials have identified the accused as 36-year-old Dattatraya Ramdas Gade, a known history-sheeter with a criminal record. According to the Swargate police station, Gade had multiple theft and chain-snatching cases registered against him and had been out on bail since 2019. Law enforcement agencies have launched a manhunt to apprehend the accused, with 13 teams formed to track him down and ensure his swift arrest.
The incident has led to widespread anger among citizens and political leaders, who have strongly condemned the crime and demanded justice for the survivor. Maharashtra’s opposition parties have slammed Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the Home Department portfolio, for failing to ensure public safety. Many have pointed out lapses in security at public transport hubs and have called for stringent measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar called the crime “extremely unfortunate, painful, and shameful” and has pushed for strict action against the accused. He has also stated that Maharashtra’s law enforcement agencies must act swiftly to apprehend the suspect and ensure he faces the harshest punishment possible. There are growing calls for fast-track trials in rape cases to deliver timely justice to survivors.
Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has announced the immediate replacement of all 23 security guards stationed at the Swargate bus stand. Additionally, an inquiry has been ordered to determine security lapses and prevent such incidents in the future.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken suo motu cognizance of the case and has demanded a thorough investigation. The commission has urged state authorities to strengthen safety measures in public spaces to ensure the protection of women.
