N. Biren Singh Resigns as Manipur CM Ahead of No-Confidence Motion

Imphal : In Manipur, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh submitted his resignation letter to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla today. Shri Biren, who led the BJP government in Manipur since the party came to power in 2017, stepped down amid ongoing political developments in the state. His resignation follows months of unrest and internal party conflicts, making it a significant moment in the state’s political landscape.

The political maneuvering within the State BJP government had been ongoing for several days. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh arrived in Imphal this afternoon from Delhi, accompanied by BJP Lok Sabha MP and BJP North East In-Charge Sambit Patra. During his visit to Delhi, he also held discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the political situation in the state. Upon his arrival in Imphal, Shri Biren convened a meeting with MLAs of the ruling party at the CM Secretariat, where crucial discussions on the state’s leadership were held. Following this, he proceeded to Raj Bhavan, where he met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and formally submitted his resignation.

The resignation has led to significant uncertainty regarding the state’s leadership. The seventh session of the ongoing 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly is scheduled to commence tomorrow. However, it remains unclear whether Shri Biren Singh will continue in office as a caretaker CM until a successor is appointed, or if the BJP leadership will swiftly install a new leader before the assembly session begins. The political landscape in Manipur is expected to witness further developments in the coming days, as various factions within the BJP navigate the leadership transition.

The unrest in Manipur, which has been a major concern for both the state and central governments, played a key role in the recent political shifts. The BJP’s handling of the situation and its choice for the next Chief Minister will be crucial in determining the party’s standing in the state. Political observers suggest that the resignation of N. Biren Singh could pave the way for fresh leadership, potentially altering the state’s governance approach amid ongoing ethnic tensions and administrative challenges.
