Gwalior : In a tragic and shocking incident, 20-year-old Tanu Gurjar was shot dead by her father, Mahesh Gurjar, just days before her wedding in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. The chilling murder took place on Tuesday evening in the Gola Ka Mandir area of the city, as Tanu’s family dispute over her choice of marriage partner turned fatal.
Tanu, who had publicly opposed her family’s arranged marriage for her, had shared a video on social media earlier that day in which she expressed her desire to marry Vicky, a man of her own choice. The video revealed the pressure she had been facing from her family, including her father, and her fears for her life. In the 52-second clip, Tanu named her father, Mahesh, and other relatives as the source of her distress, claiming that they were threatening her and physically abusing her.
“I want to marry Vicky. My family initially agreed but later refused. They beat me daily and threaten to kill me. If something happens to me, my family will be responsible,” she said in the video.
Her family’s opposition to her relationship with Vicky, who had been her partner for six years, led to the tragic events. Just hours after sharing the video, Tanu was shot at close range by her father in front of police officers. According to authorities, Mahesh Gurjar, enraged by his daughter’s defiance, allegedly shot her with a country-made firearm. Tanu’s cousin, Rahul, is said to have acted as an accomplice, ensuring her death by firing additional shots.
The police had arrived at the scene shortly before the shooting, but tragically, they were unable to prevent the horrific crime. The murder has shocked the community and raised questions about the extent of honor-based violence still prevalent in certain regions.
Tanu had been in a long-term relationship with Bhikam “Vicky” Mawai, a man from Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Despite initial family consent, her relatives later backed out, leading to escalating tensions and ultimately, her tragic death.
This horrifying act has sent shockwaves through the city and beyond, highlighting the dangers of familial control and the extreme consequences of forced marriages. Authorities have launched a full investigation into the matter, and both Mahesh Gurjar and Rahul have been arrested in connection with the crim
