J&K : In a troubling escalation of violence in Jammu and Kashmir following the recent assembly elections, more than a dozen lives have been claimed in a string of terror attacks over the past two weeks. The latest attack took place on October 24, targeting an army vehicle near Gulmarg in the Baramulla district. The ambush left four dead, including two Army officers and two civilian porters, and resulted in multiple injuries. Security forces promptly launched a large-scale search operation along the Line of Control (LoC) near Gulmarg, sealing travel routes to intensify efforts to locate the attackers.
Hours prior to the Gulmarg assault, a laborer from Uttar Pradesh was shot in the Tral area of Pulwama district, sustaining critical injuries. This assault highlights the recent pattern of targeting civilians and non-local workers, spreading fear among the labor force essential to infrastructure and development projects in the region.
The violence follows an October 20 incident that saw seven lives lost in Ganderbal district. Six non-local laborers and a local doctor fell victim to gunfire by terrorists at the Z-Morh tunnel construction site. The brutal attack underscored a worrisome focus on targeting laborers and essential service providers, disrupting not only public safety but also critical development projects within the union territory.
Since the election results were announced, a total of seven terror attacks have struck Jammu and Kashmir, leaving both security personnel and civilians dead and injured. In response, security forces have heightened their presence and ramped up intelligence operations to safeguard the region. They are focusing particularly on areas near the Line of Control and critical infrastructure sites that have been targeted in recent attacks. However, the frequency and spread of these attacks, from Baramulla to Pulwama, have intensified security concerns, marking one of the most challenging periods of unrest in recent years.
The recent wave of attacks appears aimed at destabilizing the region and undoing the progress made in restoring normalcy after the elections. These attacks not only challenge security measures but also threaten the lives of civilians, non-local workers, and armed personnel who contribute to the economic and social landscape of the region. In the face of such adversity, the union territory’s administration has pledged to bolster security measures and has sought cooperation from community leaders to counteract fear and reassure residents.
With an increasing number of incidents, there is now a renewed focus on enhancing border vigilance and deploying additional security forces to sensitive areas. Authorities remain vigilant, but the spate of attacks underscores the complexity of maintaining peace and stability in the region post-elections.
